After a couple years of being dragged to professional meetings by my advisor, I started to really get the hang of it: networking, listening to great papers, eating, etc., and generally having a blast! Then, as fate would have it, I started dragging my fellow students (and future colleagues) along with me. My introduction to these meetings was probably typical. I first started out attending without contributing much, but then began volunteering, and finally progressing to a more active participation,including presenting. It was only then did I realize just how much behind-the-scenes effort actually goes into a conference!
