Aditya Birla Nuvo has outlined a programme, costing 550-600 M, to raise its global carbon black capacity from the current level of 790,000 tonnes/y to 1.1 M tonnes/y by 2010. Birla Carbon (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Aditya Birla Nuvo) is the fourth largest producer worldwide, after Cabot, Evonik/Degussa and Columbian.Alexandria Carbon Black is a joint venture between Birla Carbon and the Egyptian Government. Its plant at Alexandria (on the Mediterranean coast of Egypt) was established in 1994, with an initial capacity of 20,000 tonnes/y, employing technology from Continental Carbon (of the US). The plant now has a capacity of 285,000 tonnes/y, so it is already one of the largest carbon black plants in the world and Birla plans to double its capacity to 570,000 tonnes/y.
