Indian state tax proposals threaten chemical sector

The Government of Tamil Nadu, an Indian state of over 60 million population, in its Budget 2002-2003, has proposed to levy an entry tax of 12% on 15 items including PVC pipes, chlorine and caustic soda. According to one fo the Vice-Presidents of Tamil Nadu Dyes and Chemcials Merchants Association, the entry tax would have an adverse effect on the chemical units in the state.
