DSC analyses were performed to elucidate the adhesion mechanism between plasma polymer-modified silica fillers and epoxy resin by demonstrating chemical bond formation.Fused silica fillers were coated by plasma polymer coating of 1,3-diaminopropane,allylamine,pyrrole,2-epoxy-5-hexene,allylmercaptan or allyl alcohol.The silica fillers were then mixed with biphenyl epoxy and phenol novolac,with triphenylphosphine added to only selected samples,to prepare samples for DSC analyses.Samples were also prepared with as-received silica fillers and monomers for plasma polymer coatings.
