Avantium has inked an agreement with Japanese firm Mitsui & Co Ltd for the commercialization of 100% bio-based chemicals polyethylene-furanoate (PEF) and furan-dicarboxylic acid (FDCA) in Asia. In line with this, Mitsui has secured a right to procure a considerable volume of FDCA from Avantium's first commercial FDCA unit. While construction of this plant is only at the preparation stage, Avantium will continue to manufacture PEF resin at its pilot facility in Geleen, the Netherlands, which has a 40,000 tonnes/y capacity. Avantium has designed a proprietary 2-step catalytic method to produce FDCA from sugars instead of terephthalic acid.
