Henkel 1Q 2013: strong earnings growth but sales stagnate

In 1Q 2013 Henkel had adjusted EBIT up almost 9% year on year at ?600 M, with all three business sectors contributing. Reported EBIT was ?565 M compared to ?538 M in the prior-year quarter. The operating margin was up 1.2 percentage points at 14.9%. Net profits were up ?32 M at ?393 M. Henkel's sales in 1Q 2013 were ?4.03 bn, an increase of 0.6% but below analysts' expectations of ?4.12 bn because of falling sales in the adhesives business. Organic sales growth, which excludes the impact of foreign exchange and acquisitions/ divestments, rose by 2.5%.
