Improvement in Operational Efficiency of IFFCO's Complex Fertilizer Plant at Kandla

A dynamic scenario exists in the Indian fertilizer industry due to various factors like frequent changes in policies, fixation of selling price and concessions, market competition, monsoon moods, natural calamities like floods, cyclones, earthquakes or drought which affect demand supply situation, increasing needs of the consumers or impact of WTO. These changes affect the bottom line of any organisation. But irrespective of these changes, the Kandla unit of IFFCO is fully committed to make available to the farmer the right quantity of fertilizer at the right place and at the right time. The unit had expanded its production capacity by installing two new streams of DAP plants based on dual pipe reactor technology. Although this plant is only three years opld, it has successfully streamlined the operation by making minor changes in the operational procedures, process parameters, design changes and modifications, changes in material of construction etc. to increase plant load, improve efficiency, reduce energy consumption, increases equipment reliability and reduce downtime. This has resulted in improvement of the overall operational efficiency of the plant. In this paper the approach of the unit towards "High Productivity with High Production" is discussed.
