Operating Experience of Various Catalysts in IFFCO Phulpur Complex

The paper deals with operating experience of IFFCO-Phulpur fertiliser complex with a special reference to various catalysts being used in ammonia plant. Although the expenditure on catalyst replacement on yearly basis is not very high, it is of prime importance to monitor the plant performance in such a manner that catalyst activity is maintained at the optimum pressure and minimum operating temperatures for maximum operating life of the catalyst. Simply replacing the catalyst in case of problem may not be the solution. The root cause of the problem has to be explored before decision is taken for catalyst replacement.The production cost of urea is dependent on the efficiency of ammonia plant to a great extent and the catalysts charged in various reactors and its performance play a significant role in minimising specific energy consumption for ammonia production.Three problems of ammonia-l viz, Primary reformer, HTS converter and ammonia converter together with pre-reformer in ammonia-ll have been discussed in this paper.
