Neem Coating of Urea for the Environment and Agriculture

Research on neem coating of urea for higher nitrogen use efficiency has been in progress at IARI and other research centres in India for the last 3 decades. The available results show that neem coating of urea improves nitrogen use efficiency in a number of crops and thereby reduces the nitrogen load on the environment, both in the atmosphere and the ground water. Pusa neem micro emulsion (PNME) coating of urea developed at IARI also improves its handling and storage quality. While neem cake coated technology suits individual farmers level, PNME technologycan be usefully employed at the urea plant level. The product meets the FCO specification, is ecofriendly and should be easily marketable. Our experience shows a high farmers preference for PNME coated urea. Above all PNME coating of urea is an indigenous technology.
