Current Status and Challenges of Efficient Use of Fertilisers in North Eastern Hill States of India

The average use of N,P_2O_5 and K_2O in north eastern region is only 9.1 kg,2.1 kg and 4.7 kg ha~(-1),which is 17.2 per cent,13.5 per cent and 75.8 per cent of the national; averge. The highest combined use of N,P_2O_5 and K_2O during 1995-96 in the region was in Manipur (59.5 kg ha~(-1),79.9 per cnet of All India average)and lowest in Arunachal Pradesh (1.5 kg ha~(-1),2.4 per cent of national average).Low use of fertiliser nutrients has resulted in poor productivity in the states of the region and the per ha yields of riece, amaize, whet and rapeseed/mustard are only 74.2 per cent, 74.70 per cent,58.7 per cent and 68.1 per cent of the national average. On an aveage farmers use only 11.3 per cent, 34.4 per cent,34.4 per cent and 28.5 per cent of the recommended dose of N,P_2O_5 and K_2O in the region and the yields of rice, maize,foodgrains, rapeseed/mustard and pulses obtained with farmers practices in different states of the region, vary between 47 to 74 per cent, 49 to 72 per cent., 28 to 75 per cent, 39 to 79 per cent and 44 to 84 per cent, respectively of these obtained with recommended dose of fertilisers.The paper deals with current status of soil fertility, fertiliser ses and crop response in north eastern hill states of the country. Furture strategies have been also suggested.
