An African gas bonanza

Africa's traditional gas development has mainly been in North Africa, with Algeria, Libya and Egypt the main producers. Below the Sahara, a raft of new gas developments has led the region to become the focus for developing downstream gas-based projects, where since 2000 an estimated 35-46 billion barrels of oil equivalent (boe) have been discovered in terms of both oil and gas. Africa currently has 14 trillion cubic metres (tern) of proven natural gas reserves, and gas production in Africa is forecast to grow by 2.7%/year, to 400 bem by 2035.
