Load Enhancement of Turbo Generator at SPIC, Tuticorin

Southern Petrochemical Industries Corporation (SPIC) Limited's fertilizer complex at Tuticorin comprises of an ammonia plant, urea plant, sulphuric acid plant, phosphoric acid plant, two trains or di-ammonium phosphate plants and aluminium fluoride plant. SPIC had installed a Captive Power Plant (CPP) of 18.4 MW capacity to supply uninterrupted power to these plants. CPP consists of a steam generating unit of 120 TPH at 106 kscG and 482 deg C with two turbo generators of 5.4 and 13 MW capacities. Ms. KKK, Japan supplied both the turbine units that were erected and commissioned during 1986. Turbo generator-1 is of back pressure type turbine with inlet steam pressure 106 kscG and the outlet steam pressure of 45 kscG. The output of 5.2 NW was achieved during commissioning in 1986 and the unit has been running ever since. Over a period of time, the output of the unit came down slowly. The output of the unit could not be increased beyond 4.6 MW even after repeated overhauling and inspection of the entire unit. The problem was analysed systematically and rectification was carried out to achieve the rated output of 5.2 MW.
