Indian livestock sector is estimated to be over six hundred billion rupees worth. India has the richest animalbiodiversity in the world. It provides employment to 9.8 million people as a principal status and 8.6 million in subsidiary status. This sector provides nutritional security ,through milk,meat,eggs etc. and social security by providing additional income to the farmer. Major weaknesses of Indian livestock sector are igh cost of feed material and non-availability of good quality livestock. To harness the vast potential that exists in this sector,integrated watershed approach is needed .This approach helps in complementing agricultural income and matches with the strategy of resource-based remunerative returns from the livestock of poor farmers. In this paper few examples of watershed approach are discussed.
