Nutrient Management in Cropping Systems in North Eastern Hills Region

The North Eastern Hills Regon,as the name denotes,is predominantly a hilly area.The region receives heavy rainfall during June-September,whereas the winter months are,by and large,dry.Only one main season (June-October)crop is generally grown in most of the areas. In many areas ofthis region animals are allowed to graze freely during winter as per tribal laws which also hinders the growing of winter crops.However,with the increase in population and growing needs the significance of growing more than one crop on the same piece of land during the year has been realised. To get higher yields of cropping systems,it is necessary to apply fertiliser nutrients at optimum levels so as to realise the full potential of the system. Attempt has been made to describe the most suitable cropping systems according to agro-climatic zones and the requirement for fertiliser nutrients for optimum productivity.
