摘要

This special issue of Fertility and Sterility, "Biomarkers in Reproductive Medicine," has been produced with the aim of providing a comprehensive view of the state of the art, and future, of reproductive medicine. Multidisciplinary development of new technologies and biomarkers will create an entree into personalized reproductive medicine. Personalized medicine, while well-accepted in other medical disciplines, is formative in reproductive medicine. However, with a greater understanding of each particular process in reproduction, we may be able to provide greater benefit and success to the couples we treat. Since the advent of IVF, there have been continued improvements in success because of an increased understanding of the intricacies of many processes including gonadotro-pin dosing, ovarian reserve, the selection of the fertilization technique (ICSI, IVT, or both), sperm features and function, laboratory culture conditions, cryopreservation, and choosing the optimal number of embryos to transfer. One lesson clearly learned is "one size does not fit all." New technologies leading to a better understanding of the role and function of biomarkers may facilitate the next breakthrough toward further improving our clinical success for each individual patient.
