The desire to cut costly fuel subsidies and give a further boost to the indigenous oil palm industry has prompted the Malaysian government to consider mandating the replacement of diesel fuel with bio-fuel for vehicles and machinery. If the current proposals become law,Malaysia will be the first country in Asia to take such a step. The impetus has come from the Malaysian Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities, which seeks to include the mandatory sale of biodiesel in a proposed Biofuel Bill that was due to be submitted for cabinet approval in late October 2005.If the law is approved, sales of biodiesel consisting of 5 % palm oil and 95% diesel fuel would begin in 2007.
