This paper presents an experimental study on shear tab to tubular column connections. Specimens were made by welding a single plate to the centerline of a hollow structural section column and were loaded monotonically to failure or to a specified load. The test variables were tab thickness, number of bolts, column wall thickness, and width-to-thickness ratio. The observed failure modes included punching shear rupture of column and gross shear yielding of tab. The test proved that punching shear failure would not occur if a tab could remain elastic in a loading process. The paper proposes a new design method that incorporates an overstrength factor in the punching shear criterion for the calculation of shear tab strength. The paper also proposes a dual criterion on stiffness and strength for a tubular column to be regarded as a rigid support for shear tab connections.
