In high school, I fell head over heels in love with a park. Enchanted by the mysterious ravines and breathtaking vistas of Milwaukee's Lake Park, I had no clue that I was responding just as Frederick Law Olmsted hoped I would when he designed this wondrous setting in 1895. I learned about Olmsted's influence on my hometown landscape only recently (he also designed the city's Washington, Riverside, and Juneau Parks), years after I had moved away. I simply knew that images of Lake Park were etched into my psyche like visual touchstones.
