Ask gardeners what they dislike the most about lawns and they inevitably mention too much maintenance or too many environmental issues. Although everyone might want a lush, beautiful lawn, the time spent mowing and watering it can be exhausting, and the chemicals needed to keep it looking good are often a cause of concern. Synthetic fertilizers are a big part of the problem. They contain a tremendous amount of salt, which kills beneficial microbes and dehydrates and eliminates air spaces in the soil, making it difficult for roots to grow. Lawns fed with these chemically enhanced products often require multiple herbicide and pesticide applications to maintain them.
