Kathleen Nelson appeared on the first cover of our magazine back in 1988. We visited with her recently, not only to check on her progress over the past 20 years but also to find out what she has left to learn. Pwenty years ago, I wrote about how I became a gardener: how I fell into gardening, knowing next to nothing; what I learned; and how I learned, to a large extent by trial and error. I wrote about clearing the land on my new property, dealing with the never-ending supply of boulders dropped by the glacier, coping with my many failures (the orchardi), and delighting in my successes, as I learned about plants, learned how to prepare the soil, discovered the joys of mulch (fewer weeds, more garden), built stone walls, and made my first reasoned efforts at design. I wrote about my joy and my passion.
