Govemment of India initi ated the reforms in the fertiliser sector in consultation with various stakeholders. The agenda identified two major steps i.e. bringing Nutrient Based Subsidy (NBS) Scheme as a first step and as second step complete deregulation of the sector with payment of subsidy directly to the farmers. NBS scheme was implemented for phosphatic (P) and potassic (K) fertilisers w. e. f. 1.4.2010. The implementation of the scheme ensured sufficient supplies during 2010 - 11 because highly import dependent industry could arrange supply of raw materials, intermediates and finished products in time for delivery to the farmers.
