Improving income of Indian farmers and ensuring food security of the country will remain national priority. About 130 million farm families representing more than 600 million people are engaged in agriculture production which is their main source of livelihood. However, the share of agriculture in total GDP is only about 17%. Accelerating growth in agriculture is, therefore, crucial for sustained and inclusive growth of a country like India where majority of population is dependent on less than one fifth of the GDP. International experiences of development also suggest that the growth originating from agriculture is at least twice as effective as growth in other segments of the economy in alleviating poverty and promoting inclusive growth. This underlines the importance of agriculture in India.
