ALL INDIA PRODUCTION;DESPATCH,SALE,AND STOCK OF SINGLE SUPERPHOSPHATE(SSP)DURING 2006-07 A REVIEW

After recording uneven growth in production and consumption of SSP for several years,a positive growth was witnessed consecutively in the past two years.However,the quantum of production at 2.97 million tonnes in 2006-07 was far lower than the level of 3.8 million tonnes attained in 1997-98 and 1998-99.There is gross underutilisation of capacity of SSP in the country.All-India capacity utilisation of SSP has remained confined within a range of 45-50% during the current decade.It was 49% in the past two years.Disproportionately lower rate of concession compared to the rising cost of production affected the stability in the growth in production and consumption of SSP over the years.Despite uneven growth experienced in the past one and half decades,India still ranks third in the global consumption of SSP,next to China and Brazil.The paper presents a detailed review of the development in capacity,production,despatch,sale,and stock of SSP during 2006-07.
