By the time September arrives, my garden has gone through both good times and bad , and I'm ready to call "uncle." Maybe that's why fall-flowering plants are so welcome. One genus is almost perfect for those who appreciate grandeur, reliability, anda bit of Americana. Perfection, thy name is Eupatorium. Unfortunately, the word eupatorium is a mouthful. I was in the car recently when I mentioned this group of plants to my daughters, Laura and Heather, who are bornagain gardeners. "Speak English, Dad," they said. "Joe Pye weed" was a little better, and then I went on to explailn that the name probaly came from a pipe-smoking North Carolina medicine man by the name of Joe Pye. "And yes," I added, "it is a weed growing on roadsides from Montreal to Atlanta, "They let me get that out of my system, then asked me to just concentrate on driving to the outlet mall.
