In California, where the gardening season lasts almost all year, it's no wonder that more people are finding creative ways to extend their living environment into the garden. Nor is it surprising that gardeners in this trend-setting region are pushingenvironmentally conscious designs to the max, while adding an artistic touch as they do so. "People are finally beginning to embrace the outdoors," says Scott Daigre, owner of Powerplant, a Los Angeles-based garden-design firm. He and other garden and landscape designers attribute the emphasis on outdoor living, in part, to a kind of frontier-busting mentality as people seek to improve their quality of life.
