Showy Shrubs for Fall

When chopping for plantsduring the cacophony of spring, it isdifficult to also plan for fall in thegarden. Yet once autumn has arrivedand your landscape blazes with colorful foliage, you will be glad that youdid. What is a more-fitting send-off toa fine growing season than a riotousswan song of maroon, yellow, orange,and red. When many people thinkof fall leaf color, native trees such assugar maple (Acer saccharum, USD AHardiness Zones 4-8) and quakingaspen (Populus tremuloides, Z 1-8)come to mind. A number of nativeshrubs, however, blaze just as bril-liantly and at a scale more suitablefor smaller gardens.
