PERHAPS THE BIGGEST DRAWBACK to container gardening is the steady care required, but not all containers require tons of time, effort, and maintenance. By sprinkling a few time-saving ideas throughout the design and maintenance phases, it's simple to bring container upkeep down to an easy-to-manage level. I always start a no-fuss combo by selecting a pot that is the right scale for its environment: Size does matter in the container-gardening world. Picking the right pot at the beginning saves me fromhaving to upgrade down the road. I resist the temptation to fill the bottom half of my large containers with packing material, opting instead to fill them entirely with a well-draining potting mix that affords plants a greater area to root into. And these pots don't dry out as fast as containers with less soil.
