For the last 30 years two fundamentally different dimensional approaches have been developed and put into practice for level-formation rock salt and potash salt mines, namely the analytical process devised by Menzel and the model-mechanics system developed by Uhlenbekker. On the basis of these procedures Hou and Lux have now developed a new method which incorporates the findings acquired over many years in the fields of salt mechanics and continuum-damage mechanics. This work involves carrying out a stability analysis for exemplary panels in a rock-salt mine with level formations according to the traditional deterministic method and using the different dimensioning systems to obtain the relevant quantitative results.
