It is now possible to calculate the expected service life of winding ropes in drum-type mine winders in which the ropes are coiled in a single layer on the drum. The paper discusses the stress-load sequence arising on installations of this type and the associated effective rope tensile forces. An example is given of how to calculate the service life of a winding rope in a deep-level winding installation, the item in question being a single rotation-free spiral-type round-strand rope. The operating life of this rope can easily be exceeded by suitable designs of special-grade winding ropes.
