From contaminated land management to the redevelopment of brownfields

The revitalization of derelict industrial sites is regarded as an important structural policy task in the industrial heartlands of Europe. Contamination in particular has proved to be a significant obstacle in the restoration of these sites in practice. This contribution provides a survey of the findings of the "Land recycling" working group within the framework of the European contaminated site research network CLARINET. The cross-relationships between contaminated sites and aspects of town and regional planning outlined by the working group are described, the currently known derelict industrial sites in the EU member states listed and the research recommendations in the English original summarized.
