Vale begins phosphate production at Bayovar

VALE HAS initiated production at its Bayovar phosphate mine in Peru, following a period of trials, the Brazilian mining major reported Monday. The operation will be formally opened on 5 August. Located in Piura, in the province of Sechura in northern Peru, the mine has an annual production capacity of 3.9 million mt/year of phosphate rock. Total investment in the project, which began in 2007, is estimated at $566 million. In addition to the mine itself, the new operation includes a phosphate concentration plant, a 32-km road, a conveyor belt system and a maritime terminal.
