NEW EU nitrate pollution prevention regulations came into force in the UK on 1 January, updating the country's implementation of the 1991 EU Nitrates Directive. It requires farmers within designated nitrogen vulnerable zones (NVZs) to follow an action programme of measures aimed at controlling when, where, how, and in what amount, nitrogen can be applied to the land. As of 1 January, about 70% of England is now designated as NVZs, up from the previous 55% (FW Online, 25 July 2008).
