The Murrin Murrin nickel and cobalt operation, located near Leonora in Western Australia's historic northern goldfields region, since May 2008, has been restructuring its operations focusing on reducing costs. As part of its cost-cutting exercise, Minara has put on ice a planned A$300m (US$ 197.1m) heap-leach expansion project at the site (FW Online, 9 January 2008). The operation has capacity to produce 40,000t/y of nickel metal and 2,500t/y cobalt metal, and includes a 4,500t/d sulphuric acid plant to supply acid for high-pressure, acid leach treatment of the laterite ores. It also includes a 2,000t/y heap leach demonstration plant.
