Anglo American to shed assets, including Copebras, and 2,700 jobs

GLOBAL MINING firm Anglo American has reported a major restructuring plan across its businesses, aimed at creating a more streamlined management structure and to further focus the group on its core mining portfolio. As part of the restructuring, Anglo American plans to sell off certain non-core assets, including Brazilian phosphate fertilizer producer Copebras. Other non-core assets which the group intends to divest include: its ferro-niobium operations in Brazil (Mineracao Catalao), its entire zinc division and Scaw Metals, as well as its Tarmac building materials division, which earlier had been identified for divestment. These assets accounted for about 11% of group EBITDA in 2008.
