RUSSIA: Uralkali has generated a net profit for 2008 of Rb29.48 billion ($870 million), the company reports. The net profit for 2008 was a 390% increase on the figure for 2007. The slowdown in the MOP market at the end of 2008 impacted on the company's results by reducing its fourth quarter net profit by 74% to Rb6.18 billion ($182 million) against the corresponding period in 2007. In 2008, the company invested Rb5.5 billion ($162 million) in upgrading and maintaining its production capacity (a 50% increase on 2007), and Rb4.02 billion ($118 million) in building new production facilities (150% increase on 2007). Combined, this represents an increase in investment over 2007 of Rb4.2 billion ($123 million).
