China revises export tariff policy on fertilizers

THE CHINESE government has finally unveiled a package of measures to stimulate the Chinese economy late on 13 November, including the revised export tariff policy on fertilizers, effective from 1 December 2008. The tax structure is based on fixed benchmark prices for key fertilizer products, with the export tariffs set reflecting domestic application seasons. Under the regulation, the export tariff is fixed at 10% if prices for export are maintained at or below the benchmark prices in off-season months, while a tariff of 110% would be applied during peak application season periods (see table below).
