Sulphate demand looks farther away in much of the US South

Ammonium sulphate use still is expected to increase this year in the Southern Plains and deep South markets, but hopes for an earlier start of its use on various crops is less likely due to snow and rain, especially west of the Mississippi River. Meanwhile, the expected gain in market share at the expense of ammonium nitrate continues, according to anecdotal reports. Distributors report fewer retailers are carrying AN each year due to rising insurance costs and safety concerns in general. Instead, these retailers are pushing farmers to use ammonium sulphate, for specialty crops either in combination with urea or by itself.
