Uralkali plans to close processing plants at Berezniki-1

AS ITS proposed merger with fellow potash producer Silvinit moves closer to completion,Russian potash producer OJSC Uralkali this week announced it is to discontinue theproduction of potassium chloride at Berezniki-1 and close the ore-treatment unit and carnalliteplant at the site. The company said its Board of Directors had reached the decision at ameeting held April 27."The mothballing and subsequent closure of the ore-treatment mill at Berezniki-1, whichhas been working at increased operational cost, is part of the company's strategy ofpreserving low costs and high productivity," Uralkali said, adding that the realisation of thisproject will reduce "considerably" the company's operational costs.
