Reaction Mechanisms of PMN-PT Powder Prepared by Molten Salt Synthesis

By analyzing the x-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) data, the difference of reacting mechanism of molten salt synthesis (MSS) and conventional mixed oxide (CMO) method were studied. The results indicated that as for MSS, unstable and B-site vacant pyrochlore phase of Pb_3Nb_2O_8 was produced and Nb~(5+) vacancies of Pb_3Nb_2O_8 could be occupied by Mg~(2+), forming an intermediate Pb_2Nb_(4/3)Mg_(2/3)O_6 which had low apparent activation energy and was very easy to transform into perovskite phase structure. The reaction mechanism of Pb(Mg_(1/3)Nb_(2/3))O_3-PbTiO_3 (PMN-PT) prepared by MSS was proposed.
