Visual methodologies through a feminist lens: South Africansoap operas and the post-apartheid nation

Using a discussion of South African soapoperas, I will place the idea of visuality in a discourseanalysis that incorporates a feminist epistemologicallens, or an epistemology that integrates reflexivityand an acknowledgment of the dialogic nature ofvisual media. Through this discussion, I will examinethe possibilities that dialogism provides for unpack-ing and exploring the politics of imperfect translationbetween the visual and the textual. These methodo-logical interventions, I argue, will help enrichdiscussions of the visual's role in the contested realmof geographic imaginations and move beyond thedistanced position of the masculine gaze.
