摘要

The study based on the outcome of a2 year involvement with women organizations in theoil rich Niger Delta region of Nigeria avers that inspite of their apparent invisibility in the dominantNiger Delta discourse, women form the first line ofsocial defence against socio-economic privation inthe region. The women play active socio-economicroles in the hostile Niger Delta environment inengendering and sustaining group and individualdevelopment. In spite of the structural and culturallimitations imposed on women, their associationallife seen in the formation of various socio-economicgroups has been invaluable to development in theregion. Thus apart from providing coping niches forindividual women, these women pool together ingroups and associations to tackle the every daychallenge of living in the region. This fact makeswomen and their groups critical agencies of inter-vention and development devolution in the regionthat should be properly harnessed in addressing thecomplex Niger Delta situation in Nigeria.
