Lieutenant Smith is sitting in his office minding his own business when the phone rings. "Station 6, Lieutenant Smith speaking!" "Lieutenant, this is Chief Jones." Silence. All of the blood has drained from the face of the officer and he is sweating—a lot. "Yes sir?" comes the weakest of responses. "I just wanted to let you know that I had a chance to watch your crew while working the scene of that accident earlier today" says the chief The lieutenants mind is racing. What did we do wrong? Think. We blocked the scene with the engine, all personnel were in the appropriate personal protective equipment, we had a charged line during the extrication, and we made quick work of getting the patient freed from his "smart car." I don't know what we did wrong, but I am sure that this is not going to go well. Before the officer can mumble a response, the chief continues, "Your crew did a great job. It is always a pleasure to watch the varsity team work. Nice job. Have a good day." Before the lieutenant can even acknowledge the compliment, the chief is gone, leaving the officer dumfounded. "What the heck just happened?"
