Florence Shu-Acquaye, Dora Mbanya and Stella Chungong: Women, the law, and HIV/AIDS in Africa: a conundrum for the legislature?

Shu-Acquaye, Mbanya, and Chungong highlight the legal challenges faced by people infected with HIV/ AIDS in Africa, exploring the connections between socio-cultural practices and the vulnerability ofAfrican women to this infection. The authors highlight the problems associated with management of thespread of HIV/AIDS, such as poverty, legal constraints, and the need for culturally appropriate considerations in order to make disease control guidelines understandable and acceptable to the majority of the population. The first of six chapters in this volume, written by Mbanya and Chungong, provides a broad overview of HIV/AIDS in Africa addressing issues like epidemiology, manifestations, and general management of HIV/AIDS in the Sub- Saharan Africa.
