With today's residential fires burning faster and more unpredictably due to the presence; of more flammable furnishings and construction materials, the FDNY, wanted answers on how to update tactids to match these changes—arid bring firefighters home safely. So theyenlisted the help of fire researchers and conducted sorne firsthand research on a major scale: In July 2012, the FDNY set fire to 20 abandoned brick townhomes on Governors Island, N.Y. Each building was furnished with modern furniture—as well as video cameras, thermal imaging cameras, sensors, heat flux gauges, gas flow probes and other testing devices.
