Growing Industry Built on White Shrimp

Shrimp aquaculture is an important component of Mexico's economy that has grown tremendously over the last few years, especially in the northwestern part of the country. Most farms are semi-intensive, with Pacific white shrimp the exclusive culture species. WSSV and other disease organisms affect production, but are generally manageable. Shrimp is by far the most important aquaculture species in Mexico, accounting for 70% of the live weight and 82% of the crop value of the country's aquaculture production. Mexico ranks seventh globally in shrimp aquaculture, and 29th in general aquaculture production.
