Selection for disease resistance has been used in breeding farm animals and can be a viable option to deal with white spot syndrome and acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease in commercial shrimp culture. The approach is worthwhile when there are noother cost-effective control measures, and there are genetic differences for resistance to pathogens. In trials, heritability for AHPND resistance was low, while that for WSS was moderate. This indicated advancing genetic resistance is feasible, although progress with AHPND will be slower.
