I worked for two years from March, 2007 in Malawi where is located in the southern part of Africa. I was sent to my new post as a village development member of the District Agriculture Development Office. My activity place "Dedza" is located in the comparatively cool highlands of altitude 1,600 m where is 85 km south from the capital "Lilongwe". I initially thought what I could do or I should do, then I conducted interviews to confirm the local need at first. The farmers' main request was to increasecash income more* It is needed to use the local resources, there is need from the market and to be the products which are differentiated from competitive products to get continuous profit by themselves, I thought. I was searching what kind of product could be developed in "Dedza" and paid attention to apiculture. Dedza is located in the highlands of altitude 1,600 m as described before. Forest resource which is needed for apiculture is enough. Necessary materials for apiculture such as lumber and wirecan be available at comparatively low cost and the running cost is cheaper. Honey is collected not by themselves but by bees. Apiculture is a business managed at low cost. Honey was taken as an alternative for medicines because medical facilities are chronically lack and it is hard to get medicines in Malawi. But honey was sold for high price compared with other products.
