In the final article on administration and Information Management and Technology (IMT), we will consider the computer in the consultation and the keeping of medical records. The word pictures of Fig. 1 describe how we use the computer when consulting with the patient.Uses the computer record and online information during the consultation The information revolution has meant that for large sections of society, i.e. those who have access to a computer and are happy to use it, obtaining electronic information is routine and expected. Not many years ago, patients were asked to come back when we had had the chance to 'look up' their condition. Nowadays, broadband, search engines and trustworthy sources of information make many such re-attendances unnecessary, except of course where we are trying to buy time! We should know which websites are authoritative/useful and be able to access these easily.
