Cal-Maine cites high feed costs

CAL-MAINE Foods Inc., the largest commercial egg producer in the U.S., has reported slightly decreased earnings for its fiscal 2011 third quarter — citing high costs for feed ingredients — but increased earnings for the first three quarters. In thethird quarter, consumer demand for eggs at the retail level remained strong, and specialty egg sales continued to grow, accounting for nearly 25% of revenues and 17.5% of total dozens sold, noted chief executive officer and president Dolph Baker. Average market prices were lower than the year before, but this was mostly offset by the increase in sales of specialty eggs, which are sold at higher prices than regular eggs, he said.
