Spirulina Meal, Feeding Attractant Spare Fishmeal In White Shrimp Diets

In a 10-week study of nursery-reared Pacific white shrimp performance, the authors found that inclusion of a commercial feeding attractant counteracted reduced levels of fishmeal in experimental diets. Similarly, the inclusion of Spirulina meal allowed reduction of fishmeal up to 25% with no detrimental effect on shrimp growth performance. Supplementation with Spirulina elicited stronger feed intake in shrimp when fishmeal was reduced by 50%. Most feeding effectors described for penaeid shrimp are ofanimal marine origin, although some work has indicated that Spirulina, a genus of filamentous microalgae, has high attractiveness for Southern white shrimp, Litopenaeus schmitti. Spirulina are frequendy found in tropical and salty waters with alkaline pH.
